With the increasing development of science and technology, the human ability of how to use the natural resources has been continuously improved. At the same time, the global natural disasters and man-made disasters happened frequently. The disasters refer to not only natural disasters but also those made by humans. In the history of the earth, human beings have an important impact on the formation and change of disasters. Human activity is also considered to be the arch-criminal of these disasters. Literature is a reflection of life and times. It pays attention to the occurrence and process of disasters, as well as people’s living condition and psychological activities after the disasters. The writers record the disasters, view the complexity of human nature and explore the value and meaning of life.Alai, a Tibetan writer, debuts in the literary field in the 80s as a poet. Alai has always been restraining himself without following any trend and genre blindly. Furthermore he wants to escape from the fickle literature field. Alai keeps his devout and love of literature. He is deeply concerned people living in hardship and loneliness. Alai’s works have not only built the ultimate imagination and deep concern on the universe, but also gone beyond the individual and nation, and exudes a strong feeling of humanity and an exotic atmosphere. His novels have a direct view of disasters and a unique way of seeking salvation road. He deserves the title of litterateur. With the purpose of finding the value and meaning of Alai’s disasters novels, this paper studies the description of disasters in Alai’s novels.This paper will study from the following aspects:Chapter one introduces the research progress in disaster literature study. The value of this paper and the research progress in disaster literature study is introduced, the relevant concepts are defined. The writing history of disasters literature is summarized from a culture view. The current trend of disaster literature is also described.Chapter two is about diversity of the disasters writing in Alai’s novels. Alai is constantly focusing on disasters and this is closely related to the environment he was raised and his unique life experience. This chapter presents a variety of natural disasters writings in Alai’s novels, and traces the chain of relationships that lead to disasters.Chapter three is the analysis of the characters under the background of disasters. By examining the mental state and image of people in the situation of disaster, the writer’s compassionate contemplation of human beings and criticism of the reality is revealed.Chapter four discusses the meaning of Alai’s disaster writing. Alai’s disaster writing contains religious feelings and poetic language. Through the induction of Alai’s novels features, this paper gives critical evaluation about the modernization process in China and the relationship between human and the nature.In the last part the characteristic and value of Alai’s disaster writing in contemporary literature is further emphasized.
