Landscape paintings began in the Wei-Jin Dynasty, and the blue-green landscape paintings is the the earliest forms of landscape paintings. With the time passing, this ancient language of color interprets its different forms of styles in all times. The Spring Outing painted by Zhan Ziqian represents characters of the heavy color blue-green landscape paintings through a independent and complete form. The popularity of Academic Blue-green Landscape Paintings in Song Dynasty motivates the color language of blue-green landscape paintings to develop into the peak. Because of people’s preference of water-ink paintings in Yuan Dynasty, the dominant position of the blue-green landscape paintings in Tang Dynasty was replaced by the water-ink paintings and the light colored paintings. Painters endowed the colors with special humane connotation. They connected it with the mental advance and retreat and the discard of political power. They abandoned the beauty of masculinity before Tang Dynasty and chose the restrained expression of sensuality.Subsequently, the Boneless Painting style by the Lan Ying, Dong Qichang, et al and "Seiko pole" painting style by Qiu Ying set off another revival of color language in history. And then, the modern master Mr. Zhang Daqian greatly expanded the expressive force of color language. He changed the traditional painting style of the blue-green paintings by creating the painting techniques of splashing ink and color. It is liberated color norms of ancient Chinese landscape greatly.The form of color language in blue-green landscape paintings goes through four stages. They are big blue-green style stage, deep-colored style stage, small blue-green style stage and modern color-splashing style stage. These four stages fully proved that the color language of blue-green paintings has a great vitality and the character of representing the spiritual outlook of history. With Chinese painting facing a situation of diversity and plurality nowadays, the color language of blue-green paintings agrees with the flourishing and magnificent social situation. This predicts the blue-green paintings will regain the dominant position in Chinese painting and outshine brightly with the development of the society.This paper studied the causes of color languages formation in different periods and the contents and characters of color language, basing on the philosophical foundation of blue-green color itself. The author also analyses the present situation of color language in blue-green landscape paintings and elaborates her own opinions on the development direction of the landscape color.
