In the history of music, it is very common for musicians to use a folk or religious music tune, "Dies irae" is the typical one. Its own characteristics of music has drawn the composer’s favor, it has appears in the compositions of Berlioz, List, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Mahler,Dallapiccola, and it works in different expressions and meanings. The romantic era composer Berlioz first clear this tune used in secular works, therefore this dissertation will first analysis the "Dies irae" its own music features, from the romantic period who had cited this tune into work, through the analysis of Berlioz "Symphonie Fantastique", List’s "Dance Of Death", Mahler’s "Second Symphony" and Rachmaninoff’s "Third Symphony", to explore the specific application mode, its meaning and connotation, and how the secular change process it is, the rules in the use of the change process.This dissertation is composed of introduction, conclusion and three main parts:The first chapter: the origin of the Dies irae and its own music characteristic.The second chapter: elaborates the conditions that "Dies irae" can use into the secular in the romantic period music, analyze the four composers’ works which used the tune "Dies irae" concretely.The third chapter: analysis and summarized the rules use in the Romanticism secular change process.Conclusion: summary and reflection. From the time, space and the specific application form to show the status of Dies irae in the western music history.
