A Study Of Meta - Discourse Markers In Short Stories Of The Qing Dynasty

In language communication, two levels or Planes of discourse are included: the primary discourse level which consists of propositions and referential meanings, and the metadiscourse level which consists of Propositional attitudes, textual meanings,and interpersonal meaning. Metadiscourse markers of vernacular short novels of Qing dynasty have discourse organization on function which to establish a suitable relationship with the participants.The essay studies on metadiscourse markers of vernacular short novels of Qing dynasty on which to examine the formal feature and functional categories on typical members. And also to studies the relationship between metadiscourse and stylistic feature.The essay includes six chapters with about 60000 characters in total.In chapter one, the introduction consists in the objects for examining, the significance of the research, the range of argument, the approach of analyzing, the back ground of related theories and the explanation of the corpora’s origin. And the last part is to review the related literature and studies on metadiscourse.Chapter two defines metadiscourse. This part discusses the relationship between discourse and metadiscourse, primary discourse and metadiscourse, the distinction of topic markers and metadiscourse markers, metadiscourse markers and parentheses,story-telling formula and metadiscourse markers of novels.In chapter three, we studies textual metadiscourse markers of vernacular short novels of Qing dynasty which includes topical structural metadiscourse markers,connective metadiscourse markers, evidential metadiscourse markers and explanative metadiscourse markers. The textual metadiscourse markers guide readers to understand and reflect the writer’s assessment.In chapter four, we studies interpersonal metadiscourse markers of vernacular short novels of Qing dynasty which includes self-mention metadiscourse, engagement metadiscourse and attitude metadiscourse. Interpersonal metadiscourse markers ofvernacular short novels of Qing dynasty focus on the participants of the interaction and establish a suitable relationship which extent of reader involvement.The five chapter studies the relationship between metadiscourse markers and stylistic feature, with a comparing that the different usage of metadiscourse markers of vernacular short novels of Qing dynasty and metadiscourse markers of vernacular chapter novels of Qing dynasty. And we also compare the usage of metadiscourse markers of vernacular short novels of Qing dynasty with metadiscourse markers of modern Chinese.The last part is the conclusion, summarizes the main ideas of thesis. And point out some short comings of this essay.
