Painting and sculpture is two important forms of art, which have a lot of differences and similarities, and they influence each other and promote each other. Showing a stereoscopic effect of pictures is a tradition of western painting, and lifelike reappearance of natural art is the people’s initial aesthetic needs. Ancient Greece civilization is the origin of western civilization, and the achievements of the sculpture of ancient Greek affect the formation of system and characteristics of the whole western culture. It can said that the basic evolution rhythm and rule of traditional art are affected by the style and direction of the sculpture of ancient Greek to a certain extent. In the later development of the western painting, paintings of different periods are dominated by the artistic ideas of times and restricted by techniques, and the sculpture in the painting also presents different features. For example, the classical art performance references three-dimensional sculpture, modern art’s new understanding and recreation of sculpture, etc., which are “visible” in visual –reference from the sculpture’s stereo character and extensity: to show three-dimensional space in two-dimensional surface and show a visual illusion of three-dimensional space; and then to “touchable” which has a rich touch experience- the use of sculpture’s material character and tactile sensation: the manifestation of pigment and material, to create paintings which occupy a certain entity space. Applying the sculpture to the painting creation has some aesthetic advantages, including the impact on the vision, the touching experience which is full of participation, the infinite imaginary space, the life’s interesting, etc., which have a strong model significance for the future easel paintings. This thesis will select several representative artists in chronological order and based on different periods, analyze their paintings and discuss the sculpture in paintings. Starting from“visible” and “touchable” and in chronological order, this paper will analyze the embodiment of different sculpture feature of stereo character, extensity, material character and tactile sensation in these artists’ paintings, analyze their unique aesthetic appreciation and forms, and the influence of the integration of sculptural elements on the future easel paintings.
