As the only national art museum since the founding of People’s Republic of China, National Art Museum of China is closely related to the development of Chinese avant-garde art. It played an important role in several significant exhibitions and events over the history of Chinese avant-garde art, such as"The Stars" (regarded as the origin of Chinese avant-garde art), "China Youth in Progress Art Exhibition" (considered as the beginning of’85 New Wave), "Robert Rauschenberg Art Exhibition" (deeply influential to Chinese avant-garde artists). However, current studies mainly focus on art management, collections, ways of display of National Art Museum of China. There is a lack of studies from the perspective of the history of Chinese avant-garde art. In this thesis, the author attempts to analyze the complex and delicate relationship between National Art Museum of China and Chinese avant-garde art in the new political, economic, and cultural context during the period of 1979-1993. Also, the author expects to investigate the ideological operating mechanism, power structure and transformation of cultural psychology hidden behind this relationship. |
