Wang Henei (1912-2000), a French-Chinese formerly called Renee Yunne-Nikel, is a major female sculptor in contemporary modern China. After a systematic education and training of academic sculpture in France in her early years, Wang Henei has mastered traditional western sculpture thoroughly. At the Ecole des Beaux-arts, she met and fell in love with the sulptor Wang Linyi, and accompanied him to China after marriage. After her arrival, she had to move a lot because of the war, and also witnessed a frenzy of the political movements shortly after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China. Although life was hard, she never left her husband, nor forsook her beloved art and China. Mrs. Wang paid close attention to the anima sculptures in the Qin and Han dynasties and Chinese traditional statues as well. Meanwhile, she and Mr. Wang has carried thorough investigations on them. She usually incorporated Chinese sculpture art with that of the West, creating a series of artworks characterized by both western accurate anatomical structure and oriental temperament and spirit, such as "The Leopard" and "The Deer". The works of Mrs. Wang well integrated Chinese and western artistic language, revealing the love of nature and humanistic feelings in the powerful and structural sculptures. Mrs. Wang cherished a deep love for China and devoted her whole life to her beloved land, at the same time contributed greatly to the development of Chinese art. This paper takes Mrs. Wang Henei as the research object. Great efforts have been made to restore our memory of this great female sculptor in the history of China by studying her life and art history, as well as analyzing her important works.
