Since the modern age, the introduction of western sculpture has injected new vitality to the development of Chinese sculpture, but also led to the deviation of value standard of Chinese sculpture and the fact that Chinese traditional sculpture art has been excluded from mainstream native culture in China. Chinese traditional sculpture art, an indispensable part of traditional Chinese culture, is characterized by its independent system and distinct value which differ from those of western traditional culture. Chinese traditional sculpture art is featured with ornamentality, imagery and pictoriality, which are interrelated and complementary to each other. We can experience intimately from Chinese traditional sculpture that aesthetic ideal are contained in varied and colorful modeling styles and principles in the course of aesthetic evolution. The above elements could be introduced as excellent traditional resources into sculpture teaching in China's contemporary art institutes and could be combined with western sculpture teaching and creation system. It will help to explore a new sculpture teaching method with national characteristics and contribute great significance in the perfect development of China's contemporary sculpture art toward nationalization and pluralism.
