Due to the transformation of China’s social structure and culture, a new value system of flower and bird painting is established. The evolution of the contemporary flower and bird painting exceeds the range of subjects given by the culture of the times, which, regardless of the expressions of objective state or subjective reflection of ideas, is the same as the traditional paintings of flowers and birds, containing both implicitness and explicitness, as well as the characteristics of uniqueness and ambiguity, except for the differences in expression techniques and cultural meanings under the context of the times. From the secular spirit to the meaning of real life, painters in the multicultural era interweave the status quo of the living, social perspective, observation of the main body with the application of images, which reflect the Realism Aesthetics that focus on the social changes. In the contemporary visual culture, it is a new trend of the art forms that flower and bird painting changes from acting as the carrier of self-independent personality into praising the life and the world outside, from the contemplation on the natural life to the consumption of visual culture.Under the conditions of a pluralistic society, flower and bird painting must improve itself, and consciously come into the mainstream discourse of the contemporary culture to conduct the assessment and innovation of the contemporary construction in order to achieve development and innovation. In this study, the transformation and changing context of the flower and bird painting, its forms and manifestations, cultural adaptability, multi-dimension evolution and other issues are explored from the aspects of theory, practice and forms of painting, etc. Furthermore, this paper reviewed the style of the flower and bird pattern and its connotation characteristics, and pointed out that the innovation and development of the flower and bird painting was shown in two ways: First, the external objective performance; second, the inner subjective spiritual connotation. Only through the expression language with its external form penetrating deep into the inner spirit, the deep meaning of spiritual and cultural content guiding the development of external form, can the flower and bird painting consciously enter the mainstream discourse of contemporary culture to consider the contemporary construction and make innovations. Art creation should pay more attention on the key issues in the real world and cultural phenomena, reflecting the people’s living conditions and emotional requirements, exploring the new schematic languages of expression able to mirror the social backgrounds and spiritual cultures, which can also deeply touch the hearts of the contemporaries to realize the social value of contemporary Chinese paintings of flowers and birds.
