On The Art Of Interpreting English Version Of Brothers

As an avant-garde novelist, Yu Hua’s works came in highly attention in the litrary circles. Owing to his colloquial and repetitive expressions, translators should try their best to restore the information when translating these Chinese works full of Chinese colors into English. This comes to omission translation.Based on Hans Robert Jauss and Wolfgang Iser’s reception theory, this thesis takes a study of omission translation of Yu Hua’s novel, Xiongdi. The main part launches a comparative research of the original text and the English version from the aspects of words and phrases, rhetoric, sentences and discourse. Meanwhile, the omission technique employed by the translators is also analyzed. Then, the external and internal factors of omission in Brothers in order to discover the reason why the translators employed omission in the novel are analyzed. The external factor includes cultural background, target readers, language features and patronage, while internal factor involves in the translator’s accepted norms and abilities. The last part summarizes the purpose of omission translation, also, the significance of omission translation of Brothers is discussed. Omission translation makes target readers more acceptable and readable in order to achieve cultural communication.Regarding the English version of Xiongdi as a text of omission translation enriches the content of omission translation to a certain extent. It is no longer simply regarded as a translation technique, but also analyzed on the basis of theoretical framework. The author hopes the present study will draw the attention of translators of Chinese-American literary works.
