Yama is one controversial work by Russian writer Kuprin. Since the publication of the first in a series of novels, the sound of all kinds of criticism and negation incessantly lingers on. Even now, this kind of sound still exists in literary circles. At the same time, compared with the interpretation of Kuprin’s other works, the interpretation of Yama becomes less and less. Thus, this paper tries to reinterpret the novel again through different perspectives so as to enrich the research of the novel.This paper aims to reinterpret Yama through in-depth analysis of the theme of the novel, character image, narrative art, and then analyze the writer’s original intent and ideological connotations of the novel. This paper intends to regard literature induction and the analysis of text as the main research method, and then further analyzes the yet undiscovered ideological connotations of the novel on the basis of interpretation of the work. Through the analysis of the theme of the novel, the paper explores Kuprin’s deep humanitarian spirit and unique cognition and perception towards the loneliness and the death of human being; it reveals the author’s sympathy for the fallen women and strong criticism towards the tragedy maker by using the analysis of the characters. And the analysis of the temporal and spatial characteristics, narrative perspective and the language arts of fiction shows author’s unique narrative techniques.
