Aleksandr Ivanovich Kuprin was a famous Russian realistic writer. Unique life experience made him possess a keen ability of life observation. He rendered vivid Russian social custom and various characters from all levels of society reappear. In his unique literary works of a distinct style, living conditions of every stratum of Russian society from the end of the 19 th century to the early 20 th century were reflected in depth. Kuprin’s works have been well-liked by readers both home and abroad for a long time and his works are more “readable” than many other Russian literary classics. However, unfortunately, domestic research on Kuprin’s novels is very few. Though there are some professional review articles, research results remain insufficient. By previous reading accumulation, among a variety of characters in Kuprin’s novels, the author found out that Kuprin paid attention to female groups and created a series of famous characters who reflected mental outlook of characters from every stratum of Russian society.This paper focused on and classified female characters of Kuprin’s works. Therefore, proceeding from analysis of female characters, this paper studied Kuprin’s description of female characters and analyzed cultural connotation behind these characters.This paper mainly included five parts, the introduction and other four chapters.Chapter one “A paean of natural female”: Olesja was chosen to be analyzed in this chapter. Compared with the living environment of modern people, hers was completely different. By analyzing her natural characteristic, the writer’s attitude toward nature and ideal woman’s fate was discussed.Chapter two “Sad tune of orectic female”: female chosen in this chapter was totally different from natural female. Life under modern civilization was rethought and how women’s self-realization should be was discussed mainly by her’s life tragedy.Chapter three “Female lost in vortexes of emotions”: Female lost in vortexes of emotions was chosen to be analyzed in this chapter. Character image analysis was carried out from respects of motivation and ending. Willingness of their emotional lost and Kuprin’s understanding to female emotions were discussed.Chapter four “Suffering prostitutes”: Character image analysis was carried out on representatives chosen from the prostitute group described by Kuprin to discuss reasons of their hardships and reveal Kuprin’s thought toward sufferings.
