Difficulties And Coping Strategies In Interpreting Notes

In the process of consecutive interpretation, note-taking plays a very important role of supporting and giving tips in short-term memories. Its importance is mainly reflected in turning post-listening interpretation into sight interpretation through transforming the auditory symbol into the visual symbols. In order to effectively reduce the brain’s burden of interpreters and make up for its lack of short-term memory, it transfers the source language information and straightens out the logic of source language, so that it could accurately output target and improve the performance of consecutive interpreting. The success of Interpreting depends largely on the quality of note-taking. Therefore, compared with other interpreting skills, note-taking in consecutive interpretation becomes a main and basic translation skills. For the sake of better grasping the note-taking skills, the author analyses the application difficulties and coping strategies of note-taking in consecutive interpreting taking Xi Jinping’s and Cameron’s speeches as example.The first chapter sums up the principles of the consecutive interpreting process, followed by the basic overview of note-taking, including the purposes, characteristics and effective recording principles; finally, it puts forward the theoretical basis of feasibility in note-taking. The second chapter presents the note-taking application problems in consecutive interpretation in cases of Xi Jinping’s and Cameron’s speeches. The problems are classified into the difficulties of note-taking skills, the difficulties in cognitive process and the unqualified grasp of professional vocabulary. In the third chapter, the author analyzes the strategies of note-taking difficulties in the process of practices. The strategies include the coping strategies in note-taking skills, the coping strategies in the cognitive process of note-taking and strengthening the master of basic vocabulary.
