Consecutive interpreting(CI)is an important classification of interpreting work.In the process of CI,an effective note plays an important role in assisting short-term memory to maximize its effect for serving for CI by working together with note-taking.How interpreters make note-taking better to help with the interpretation quality improvement of CI has always been a trouble to deal with for CI researchers.However,as for most trainee interpreters,as they might have scarcely or never taken any professional training on CI note-taking,they may come across some problems that may be adverse to interpretation quality.Compared with English,Chinese sentences are in scattered pattern and with multiple implicit logical relations.Under some CI occasions,logical relations always cannot be easily seen in Chinese SL so that interpreters need to fully understand the SL meaning and have it reformulated before interpreting it into TL.And the reformulated information that embodied in the note will help interpreters to output interpretation much more easily.Therefore,for C-E interpreters,note-taking of C-E CI plays prominent role in the interpretation quality.Bringing problems on C-E CI note-taking to the forefront for trainee interpreters,exploring relations between C-E CI note-taking and the quality of interpretation and providing latter researching and teaching with suggestive references are the main purposes for the writer to launch this empirical research,which is based on Effort Model(EM).The research is conducted with the help of 23 post-graduates in Grade 2016 and 2017 majoring in English interpreting of MTI from SNNU as the subjects for studying their note-taking problems on C-E CI.As for the problems,the writer seeks the supporting causes and offers constructive coping strategies to the problems.Problems found in the research mainly lie in as follows.Emphases and logic relations can not be clearly figured out.The information fail to be reconstructed before noting down.Interpreters of the CI experiment are not accustomed to using note symbols in their notes.This thesis is an interpreting research paper.The empirical research is conducted through two approaches as follows.First,by virtue of one of the third-party platforms which runs on WeChat,Questionnaire on C-E Consecutive Interpreting Note-taking is designed for the subjects to fill out.The collected outcome of the questionnaire is one part of research data.Second,by selecting one piece of C-E CI audio material lasting about 4 and a half minutes as the SL resource,the writer invites all the subjects to take a simulated C-E CI experiment on the spot and record their performance,then collect their original recording and notes as the other two parts of research data.At the same time,the data of this research is to be analyzed together with the previous research literature to draw new research conclusion.Chapter One is a brief introduction to the whole research paper,including the background,the significance,the objectives as well as the layout of the whole thesis.Chapter Two is Literature Review,including the general revision and commentary of the previous research findings on CI note-taking from home and abroad,as well as deficiencies of the previous studies on CI note-taking.Chapter Three is the illustration of the theoretical framework of the thesis,including the major functional concepts of this research,the elaborated presentation of Effort Model as well as the analytical framework of the thesis.Chapter Four is the nuclear part of the whole thesis.It illuminates the empirical research for C-E CI note-taking problems of post-graduates in Grade 2016 and 2017 majoring in English interpreting of MTI of SNNU,including research questions,research hypotheses,research methodology as well as the data analysis of the empirical research aiming to discover the relation between C-E CI note-taking and the quality of interpretation.Chapter Five is the conclusion of the whole thesis,including the sum-up of the empirical research and the restatement of the discovered C-E CI note-taking problems.In the end,suggestive coping strategies based on the discovered problems and the causes of these problems are proposed in this chapter.
