In Qing Dynasty, Chinese ancient phonology study had reached a peak. In the process of research in anci ent phonology, Scholars made full use of the pictophonetic characters of Analytical Dictionary of Characters t o explore the ancient voice system, and then wrote a large number of outstanding works. "The sound spectru m" is one of them and its author is Shi Yongmai. This book specializes in writing pictophonetic characters, arranging 13918 pictophonetic characters of " Analytical Dictionary of Characters ", according to the twenty divisions of ancient rhyme. He divided the ancient rhyme with reference to Wang Niansun’ twenty-two divisions,and compromise d on all scholars’ theories. "The sound spectrum" depended on "Analytical Dictionary of Characters" but not limited to it..In terms of rhyme division, Shi Yongmai advocated "alternation between yin and yang, entering into the voice of ru ". He stated clearly that "Xiao" along with "Ge" is not a single independent division of ancient rhyme. In particular, he creatively put "Zhi" and "Yi" as the female voice of "Ji" and "He". In terms of words’ attribution, he referred to the sound reading materials of "Analytical Dictionary of Characters" and combined with other people’s point of view as well as verse, Yi device, the inscriptions and other materials to divide rhyme and classify the words. For the return portion of some ambiguous words, he was not superstitious to other’s point of view, putting forward his own insights. "The Sound spectrum" is a book for the crystallization of Shi Yongmai’s Thoughts, expressing many of his insights, which have instructive significance to study the ancient phonology and great research value.This paper introduces "The sound spectrum" from the aspects of the author, version, academic background, style, the main content and words’ attribution, which aims to explore the phonology thoughts to help us to see the study situation in the late Qing Dynasty phonology.
