The theme painting of darkness appeared during the medieval period. The darkness painting can cause curiosity of exploring human’s dark side and inspire source of stren gth. It is the key that opens a grey gate, and makes people living in beautiful world tr y exploring the corner which is ignored in human nature. This lets people understand th emselves and better control their own nature and desire. It is like an ancient copper mi rror, reflecting the darkness at the bottom of people’s heart and making people see the mselves in front of the mirror to get rid of dark desire and realize their own beautiful value. As an artistic phenomenon, I believe it is necessary to research on it. Reviewing artistic development history, we found that phenomenon existed overtly or covertly. Ho wever, rare researchers explore or study it systematically. No one put forward the conce pt of darkness, and no other artists practice to prove the concept. I try doing the job.As it is an artistic phenomenon, so the academic paper gets a clue and makes an explanation: what is painting of darkness? I put forward a concept by comparing, provi ng and observing from different angles of aesthetics or philosophy: when seeing some c oncept images, people will develop fear, sadness, anxiety and other negative effects on vision. In order to meet appreciation of the beauty and curiosity, people’s view on the mselves and society becomes primary method of painting artistic form. My academic pa per proves the concept especially by James Ensor’s artistic practice, further proving the importance of darkness in artistic application. This is the most important part of the aca demic paper and also what I want to say most.James Ensor was born in Oostende, Belgium. His works feature darkness and epoc hal character. The tradition of Northern European paintings often shows a little mystique and strange feeling. Therefore, we will seek regional culture which lies in deep structu re, and get inspiration through exploration. The academic paper tries clearing developing trace of the darkness painting to find out the appearance of darkness in painting so as to keep on exploring via the window. By analyzing thoughts of human nature, we let viewers experience different influence of various regional cultures on artists. Revealing t he kind of tragic aesthetics or goodness view by description and expression, this expres sion is very meaningful. The academic paper mainly consists three parts. The first chapter defines the concept of darkness painting: what is the darkness? And what does it mean? That is also an important chapter. Starting with a movie called Coraline which demonstrates darkness painting, thechapter seeks source and further analyzes painting tactics as well features to show experience for viewers at last. The second chapter explains the importance of darkness in James Ensor’s works by reviewing his artistic journey including his childhood and creative path, and gives several features of darkness painting and expressive meaning on touching of people. That shows that darkness painting not only displays disgust, fear and anxiety but also causes deep thought and preaches the truth, goodness and beauty. The third chapter briefly states aesthetic values of darkness painting, expressing my knowledge on darkness painting. That is that darkness paintings not only show anxious feelings to viewers but also satisfy some kinds of people’s deep psychological needs, making us feel strength and nobility. It is a type of power improvement and full beautiful feeling which owns deep meaning in present society. I hope that people can learn about darkness painting and pay attention to it further when they read the academic paper.
