A Study Of The Thought Of "Xuan" In

Ge Hong, a famous religionist and ideologist in the East Jin Dynasty, who had a profound effect on the development of Taoism. Ge Hong was the representative personage of the “Xuan”(Metaphysics, a philosophical sect in the Wei and Jin dynasties) he epitomized the thought of this school. In other words, he was the founder of the Taoist Metaphysics.Ge Hong, believed that the “Xuan” was the beginning of all things. In his theory,the “Xuan” is the same as the “Tao”(a doctrine of Taoism) of Lao Zi(a philosopher in the Spring and Autumn period, the founder of Taoism). Lao Zi mentioned the “Xuan”in the Tao Te Ching, but he argued the “Xuan” was a part of “Tao”. However, Ge established his own ideological system about “Xuan”, it is based on Tao’s theory. In addition, he expound his idea that the “Xuan”(celestial being) could learn in Baopuzi Inner Chapters. Then, the whole ideological system was built-the “Xuan”supplemented by the “Xuan”.Ge Hong through the analysis of Lao Zi’s theory, and fused the Taoism and the theory of deities. So as to study his own ideas about the “Xuan”. The “Xuan” was suitable for the request of that time. His “Xuan” has significantly influenced the development of Taoism.
