In English-Chinese consecutive interpretation, the interpreter listens to the source language, integrates, processes the information and finally delivers it to the audience in a short time. Therefore, listening comprehension is the first step of utmost importance in consecutive interpretation. Frequent use of long sentences may lead to a big problem in listening comprehension. The thesis starts with the characteristics of English long sentences. By comparing the reference interpretation and writer’s version transcribed from writer’s recorded practice, the writer of the thesis analyzes the mistakes made in consecutive interpretation practice and summarizes two obstacles of listening comprehension of lo ng sentences. The first obstacle is the obstacle of information acquisition, which is caused by the long content of the sentence. The second is the obstacle of the acquisition of logical relationship, which is caused by the complicated structure of the long sentences. Finally, the thesis proposes four coping strategies: reasonable prediction, identification of key words, key information and key signal words. These strategies may help interpreter to cope with the obstacles and to improve the quality of interpretation. |
