In consecutive interpretation,note-taking plays a crucial role in the smooth conduct of interpretation.According to Gagne's theory of information processing,note-taking can help reduce the burden of memory, deepen short-term memory, and act as clues to help activate memory. This article is a case study on English-Chinese consecutive interpretation, which records a mock conference of consecutive interpretation conducted by the author, and focuses on the problems of note-taking caused by listening comprehension barriers, hoping to find an effective coping strategy. The author analyzes this mock conference through examples. Each example includes four aspects: source language, translation, notes and analysis. The analysis can be generalized into three different levels: sentence structure, words and speaker's emotional tendency. Then the author classifies the obstacles and the impact of these listening comprehension barriers on note-taking into different categories, such as the lack of logical linking words, the undifferentiated information levels, the spelling of words regardlessly and note-taking without proceeding the information. In response to these problems, the author tries to give some corresponding coping strategies from improving listening comprehension ability, reducing the burden of listening and expressing,to note-taking skills.Through this study, the author is hoping to help improve interpreters' ability of note-taking in their future work.
