The profound exploration toward the connotation of calligraphy is the knowledge base of setting Calligraphy Aesthetics as an independent discipline. The aesthetic category of “Xiu”( 秀) has already gained its elementary research achievement in the field of literature while the field of calligraphy still owes it a comprehensive collation and connotative interpretation. “Xiu”(秀) is a unique conception in the ancient calligraphy theory. The multi-meaning of “Xiu” shows it diverse features in the ancient calligraphy appreciations and its extensive binding force derives a series of categorical groups. Therefore, this paper tries to dig up its profound meaning from the angle of ideological history and literary criticism. By combing the emphasis and binding forms of “Xiu”(秀)in the utilization of ancient theory of calligraphy and by summarizing the application rules of “Xiu”category in calligraphy, this paper means to uncover the aesthetic value of “Xiu”(秀) in ancient calligraphy as well as its characteristics of the times.
