Architecture As An "exhibition": Snake - Like Gallery Exhibition

The object of this thesis is the Serpentine Gallery Pavilions in Hyde Park,London. The series of projects started in 2000, and since then every year, Serpentine Gallery, the organizers has invited architect or team of architects to design a temporary pavilion to held various activities in the summer. This is a test of the ability for the architect, because only six months from design to completion. These pavilions are only three or four months of life, they have to be sold and removed.This paper is based on the construction of the Serpentine Gallery Pavilions, from the background and characteristics of the two aspects to study on Serpentine Gallery Pavilions. Firstly, the historical background of the Serpentine Gallery Pavilions to define the scope of the research. Secondly, from the spatial structure, use of materials, construction methods, to analyze the character of construction of the Serpentine Gallery Pavilions. Thirdly, base on the nature of the serpentine Gallery pavilions, form exhibition, experimental, temporary to analyze and summarize their features. Finally, the author takes Nanjing University Arts as the base background to design an experiment of temporary building, from the establishment of objectives and methods, experimental preparation, experimental operation and experimental expression. The theoretical knowledge has been verified and feedback.Hope that through this study, we can let people have a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion, and jointly promote the development of the field of architecture, for the sustainable development of human society.
