Elliott Sober and David Sloan Wilson wrote a book, titled Unto Others:The Evolution and Psychology of Unselfish Behavior. They put forward the theory of evolutionary altruism, and discuss the rationality that altruism comes from morality. This paper first introduces Darwin’s theory of evolution brought a problem of altruism, and it’s dilemmas. Then discusses the problems and controversy of the group selection theory. Then the fall of group selection theory was accompanied by the rise of other theories. One was kin selection, another was the evolutionary game theory, the third was gene theory. Sober and Wilson raise multi-level selection theory, arguing that the nature selection force could impact on different levels. They also further demonstrate the rationality of the group selection theory, on the basis of cultural evolution under the background of group selection. Group selection may have been an especially important force in human evolution.Although there are some theoretical deficiencies in the theory of evolution altruism, but they explain ethics from another angle. Study their thoughts not only enriched the research methods and research contents of traditional ethics, it also promote the research of the theory of ethics, and it provide a new perspective for us to explain the source of morality. From practical significance, the research of the theory of evolutionary altruism has implications for the construction of a harmonious society.
