Learning burnout refers to students’ exhausted state of mind in the learning process caused by lack of motivation for what they have to do. Junior school students are at puberty. With emotional instability and high academic pressure, they are very likely to be disturbed by learning burnout, to which importance must be attached. Effective psychological interventions can be taken to help those students whose learning burnout is serious to relieve the problem, thus to promote their physical and mental development. The purpose of this study is to explore the overall situation of learning burnout among junior school students and examine the effectiveness of Sandplay Therapy. First, a sampling of 500 junior school students of three grades from three schools in Yangzhou filled out the Questionnaire for Learning Burnout (HSSB) established by Hu Qiao, Dai Chunlin, etc., with 465 valid questionnaires collected,in order to understand the current situation of junior school students learning burnout. In the next step, with Sandplay Therapy as intervention method,20 students were randomly selected from the 99 students with learning burnout problem and 3-time initial step of Sandplay Therapy was conducted on each subject. The same procedure was performed on another 20 students randomly selected from the rest 366 students as controls. Then the common features of Sandplay works by the students with learning burnout were summarized and the effect of short-term interventions of Sandplay Therapy was measured by the comparison. On a voluntary basis,2 students were selected from burnout group to conduct Sandplay intervention for once a week, and about 15 times in all. Then the same questionnaire was used for post-test to measure the effect of Sandplay therapy in relieving learning burnout problem among junior school students further. It has been found in the research that:(1) The problem of learning burnout exists among some junior school students, and the level is in the middle generally. Among various symptoms, feelings of inefficiency in study and physical exhaustion are more severe.(2) The problem differs between boys and girls, mainly in terms of emotional exhaustion, on which the situation of boys is more severe than that of girls.(3) Grade difference is significant. The problem is the most severe in the third grade, followed by second and then first grade.(4) There are significant differences regarded academic performances. The students with poorer grades are more likely to suffer from learning burnout than those with better grades.(5) Learning burnout problems have a significant negative correlation with parent’s literacy.(6) In general, The Sandplay works by the students with learning burnout problem are weakly integrated. There is lack of links between different parts. And the theme each part reflects is inconsistent or distinct barriers exist between different parts. For another, dynamic property is not enough. The works lack dynamic images such as water, mountains, people, vehicles, etc., which indicates that their psychological energy is relatively weak. What’s more, the works are not rich or smooth enough, but rather monotonous and disordered. This can be told in their works from scarce varieties of toys, little moving sand, lack of self-image, few communication scenarios, the majority theme of wars, outside conflicts, confrontations and the fact that there are more lifeless things than living ones.(7) Sandplay therapy can effectively relieve the learning burnout problem of junior school students.
