Patrick Modiano is one of the most influential French writers and had won several important literary awards. Memory, identity and history are the three themes of his literary creation during his life,seeking is the key word through all his literary works. As a master of the French " La nouvelle Fable ".his novel has some distinctive allegorical properties.This thesis research allegorical properties of Modiano"s works based on the western allegory theory and demonstrates the really exist of allegorical properties in his literary works. Then further study the characteristics of his literary creation and the ideological source of allegorical fictions.This thesis consists of three parts:introduction, main body and conclusion. The introduction part gives a detail instruction of the meaning of study Patrick Modiano. And also briefly introduce the content and the research method used in this thesis. The main body part is divided into four chapters, respectively, for:The first chapter of the main body studies the theoretical basis of the research on allegorical properties of Modiano’s fictions. This chapter combs both the traditional western allegory theory and the modern western allegory theory which based on the Benjamin’s allegory theory. And also researchs French " La nouvelle Fable " and the allegorical inclination of Modiano’s literary creation.The second chapter of the main body studies the expressions of allegorical properties in Modiano’s novels. Study the method of how to show the multiplicity of meanings. breakable character and parody in a fiction. The study shows that Patrick Modiano embodies multiplicity of meaning by the allegorical symbols of multiple images, embodies the breakable character by the fragmented language and structure and embodies parody by the subversive creation of detective stories.The third chapter of the main body discusses the creation characteristics of Modiano’s novels. The first characteristic of Modiano’s literature is the portrait of the classic image of "beach man". The second one is connecting all fragmented novel plots into an allegorical archipelago. The last one is binding his own real growth experience with the fictional history.The forth chapter of the main body focuses on the ideological source of Modiano’s allegorical fictions. The study shows that the self identity uncertainty caused by the shadow of childhood, the contradiction of double identity caused by the Second World War and the failure of seeking roots constitute the ideological source of the allegory in Modiano’s literature.In the conclusion part, summarizing the value and meaning of the allegory in Modiano’s literature based on the above research.
