Yu Ying-shih is one of today’s most important historians overseas, whose academic point of view, the concept of history and research methods are worthy of attention. This paper focuses on his“inner logic” with in-depth analysis and discussion. This article interprets the meaning of“inner logic”. It is pointed out that the “internal logic” is not only a product of the traditional Chinese intellectual history itself, but also deeply influenced by R.G. Collingwood’s philosophy of history and Thomas S. Kuhn’s theory of “paradigm”. It can be said that“inner logic” is the East-West ideological product of the intersection under the cultural perspective. The focus of the paper is Yu Ying-shih’s explanation of “inner logic”. This paper focuses on Yu Ying-shih’s three masterpieces:Dai Zhen and Zhang Xuecheng, The Historical World of Zhu Xi, Chinese Modern Religious Ethics and Businessman Spirit. It analyses the“inner logic” in intellectual history, political history, social history and other fields. The author made a comparative study between Yu Ying-shih’s “inner logic” and Paul A. Cohen’s “internal approach”. Both of them pay close attention to inner life and inner development of Chinese history, attaching importance to the role of internal factors. Both of them criticize John K. Fairbank ’s “impact-response” model and suggest gazing at China from the internal perspective. Paul A. Cohen put forward the view of “discovering history in China” and “China-centered Approach”, which is coinciding with Yu Ying-shih.Finally, this paper reveals the interpretation limits of “inner Logic”, pointing out that the final destination of “inner logic” is blending inside and outside, uniting subject and object.
