During the 18 th and 19 th centuries, piano music of the classical and romanticperiods reached its peak. Czerny and Liszt are two representative pianists duri ng this period. Czerny’s Op. 740 and Liszt’s Transcendental Etudes are their representati ve etudes. From the background analysis of these two works, it can be seen that these tw o works have succession relation, but also differences regarding technique categories, ar tistic features and performance disposal due to the transitions of music background and styles. Therefore, it has particular values and meanings to conduct a comparative researc h of these two typical works. This paper gives a comparative analysis of Czerny’s Op. 740 and Liszt’s Transcendental Etudes, firstly briefly introduces their technical categories, artistic features, then found their relationship by detailed comparisons, analysis betwee n a lot of their scores, and hence enlightens thoughts about their evolution process. The author endeavors to find the connections and differences on the technical categories, arti stic features and performance disposal of these two works by a comparative analysis. B y knowing and grasping these connections and differences, performers can catch a deep er understanding of these two works and better improves their technique and music expr ession in performances, and better grasp the music styles of the classical and romantic periods.
