"Red Sorghum": From Novel To Film And Television

“Hong Gao Liang Jia Zu” was published in 1986 by Mo Yan. It is composed by five parts, “Hong Gao Liang”, “Gao Liang Jiu”, “Gou Dao”, “ Gao Liang Bin” and “Qi Si”.The novel has praised the humanity and shown us the war of anti-Japanese.The movie “Red Sorghum”, which is directed by Zhang Yimou and released in 1987,has obtain the 38 th Berlin International Film Festival Golden Bear, it is first Chinese Movie to get this award. It has shown us the praise of life and the local customs. The movie didn’t limit by the novel, and Mr. Zhang Yimou has turned the “soul” of the novel to the “soul” of the movie, he considered the novel as the original material, which is waiting to be processed. He has used the way of in center of image to explain the concept.In 2012, Mo Yan was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature, this has caused people’s attention to the “Hong Gao Liang” again. Meanwhile, people look forward to see the TV drama version of “Hong Gao Liang”. And finally, the TV drama version was released on Shandong TV. The TV drama version has shown us the more rich story and complex characters. The TV drama is a representative of the popular, there are some similar of audience and interoperability between the TV drama and novel. This helps the TV drama on image interpretation.When we compare three different media, original novel, version of the movie and TV versions, we could find that: Even to explain the same story, the performance will be different due to different way of narrative technique. This article aims to work on the artistic uniqueness between these three versions.
