Nida defines “translation” as “reproducing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent of the source-language, first in terms of meaning and secondly in terms of style”(Nida, 1998). In this regard, the meaning and spirit of the origins should be given priority while translating, making the response of the readers the standard to judge whether the translation has accomplished its purpose or not. According to the theory, translators are able to start from the perspectives of lexical, syntactic, textural and stylistic equivalence, among which the first three ones would be the focuses of this report. As implied meaning and cultural features are two elements expected to be reserved or reproduced in novel translation, Functional Equivalence could be the proper guidance for the translation of the selected material—Hong Gao Liang Jia Zu( Chapter One) written by the Nobel Prize winner Mo Yan as his very first and most representative novel in 1980 s. Mainly applying the two methods of exemplifying and contrasting, the report explores the C-E translation strategies from the following three aspects: equivalence on lexical level, equivalence on syntactic level and equivalence on textural level. As the report reveals, it is far from enough to get an overview of the figures and plots when conducting translation practice of similar native novels. Background knowledge such as geographic location, local customs and social situation of that era are of great importance as well. Besides, the problems like Chinese culture-bounded words and sentences result in tremendous difficulties during the translation process. Furthermore, for the sake of highly-qualified version and better reader-response, translators have to pursue a full understanding of foreign culture and build a massive vocabulary bank.
