Moyan has gained a high reputation both in China and overseas. all the English versionsof Moyan’s novels are translated into America by Howard Goldblat. This thesis selects thefirst novel of Moyan—Hong Gao Liang Jia Zu as a case to do analysis. The reasons are:Firstly, Hong Gao Liang Jia Zu is Moyan’s first and most representative novel translated byHoward Goldblatt and succeed. Secondly, Hong Gao Liang Jia Zu has a high literary value intheme, language style, and the writing skills of magic realism. Taking the English version ofHong Gao Liang Jia Zu as the main material, this thesis mainly discusses the fidelity andcreation on the level of language and culture. This thesis id divided into five chapters. Chapterone shows literature reviews about Mo Yan’s novels, the study subject, significance andcontributions of the thesis. Chapter two, chapter three, chapter four are the main parts of thethesis, which mainly argue the literal value of Hong Gao Liang Jia Zu, the translator HowardGoldblatt’s views on translation and the reasons for choosing Hong Gao Liang Jia Zu totranslate. In the three chapters, this thesis mainly discusses the translator’s fidelity and hisown creation to Hong Gao Liang Jia Zu under the direction of his translation views. Sincethere exists many similarities but most differences between Chinese and western culture, thetranslator has to do some creations inevitably to be more loyal to the original work. RedSorgum is a successful product of fidelity and creation even there exist some mistranslations.Chapter five is the sublimation part, which argues the reasons why the English version ofHong Gao Liang Jia Zu succeed and thinks the exporting mode of Chinese modern literature.The last part is a conclusion, which indicates the limitations of the thesis and proposes somequestions for further research.
