The Master’s thesis A Study on the Phenomenon of Secularization in the Spreading of Chinese Buddhist Teachings is intended to analyze the prevalence of religious ideas among the Chinese public and reveal causes for such ideas as secularization of Buddhism is becoming popular. The analysis is made by combining social surveys and statistical data and happenings in daily life. It uses everyday social phenomena as examples and synthesizes historical factors and cultural development with analysis of some scholars’ explanations for the phenomenon of secularization. The thesis particularly supplements its analysis by comparing and contrasting the history of the formation of religious beliefs in minority ethnic and Haninhabited regions. With the study of Buddhist scriptures and theories, the thesis offers the author’s own opinion on the secularization of Buddhism and its abnormal spreading, a prevalent phenomenon in current China.
