A New American FTA Strategy And Its Impact On China

The economic power of US has been shrinking since the2008global financialcrisis, and US also needs stimulus to achieve economic recovery. The following threereasons, including the rise of emerging markets such as BRICS, the constant declineof trade shares of developed countries and failure of maximizing US interests underthe WTO system which has been being supported by developed economies, lead tothe issuance of new US FTAstrategy.The new US FTA strategy, also called One Body and Two Wings strategy, reliesNorth America Free Trade Zone as the body, and takes Trans-Pacific StrategicEconomic Partnership (TPP) and Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership(TTIP) as two wings, in order to keep the leading position in international trade byvirtue of establishing high standard international trade rules as this strategy involvesthe Pacific and Atlantic countries. The new US FTA strategy, categorizing intoeconomy, politics and security strategies, gets all its alliance involved in, but excludesall emerging markets, especially the anyone but China (ABC) strategy, which aims tofight against China and would definitely cause impact on economy, politics, securityand domestic reform of China.This dissertation focuses on exploring the background, purpose, transition ofdevelopment paths, and challenges of US new FTAstrategy, and analyzing the impactthat US new FTA strategy brings on the economy, geopolitics and domestic reform ofChina. Consequently, according solutions to US new FTA strategy would be putforward at this dissertation from the perspectives of Strategic location where Chinaeconomy stands in global industry value chain, the choice of China for regionalismagreement and multilateralism agreement and Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone andopening up policy of China.
