United States had allied with Pakistan for twice, but their alliances ended withPakistan being abandoned by US ruthlessly. Pakistan was pushed to the forefront ofthe war on terror and had to break off with Taliban because of “9·11” incident and thegreat pressure from the US. With the advancement of the anti-terror war, these twocountries achieved much in the field of counterterrorism, but also faced manycontradicitions and divergences. United States was extremely worried about the safetyof Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal considering its turbulent domestic situation.Since separation from each other, India and Pakistan are in the state ofconfrontation. Disadvantaged Pakistan increased its leverage against India throughalliance with the US. After the cold war, the US attached more importance to Indiaand less to Pakistan. Indo-US Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement which came intoeffect in2008raised Pakistan’s great anxiety about Indo-US relations. The ISI ofPakistan, who feared that India was gaining too much influence in Afghanistan, continued to tolerate and even offer some support to the Islamic militants and theTaliban as a hedge against the day when the United States would withdraw fromAfghanistan in2014, just as what they did in Kashmir. At the same time, Pakistan’sattitude towards the extremists impacts the Pak-US relations profoundly. However, to ensure the stability of Afghanistan, Pakistan is still the mostimportant power. Predictably, after the withdrawal of American troops, Pak-USrelations will gradually cool down, but the two sides will still contact and cooperatewith each other onAfghan issues.
