A Study On The Normalization Of Diplomatic Relations Between Japan And South Korea

Since ancient times, Japan and the Korean peninsula, facing each other across the sea, have a profound historical and cultural source. In the long-term process of historical development, there is the friendly-exchanges history, also contradictory and conflict history between the Japan government and every regime on the Korean peninsula in the different history period.The negotiation of diplomatic normalization between Japan and the Republic of Korea was held under the background of the Cold War. It is affected by the changes of America-Japan Relations and America-ROK Relations, also the changes of stakes in their own domestic politics, economy and security. After seven formal negotiations up to14years, they finally signed the Treaty on Basic Relations between Japan and the Republic of Korea on22nd June,1965, marked the end of a marathon Japan-ROK talks. The diplomatic normalization between Japan and the Republic of Korea, which brings a profound impact to Japan and the Republic of Korea, even the situation of Northeast Asia, also reflects the American Northeast Asia Strategy. In fact, the unsolved historic recognition and Dokdo ownership disputes still affect Northeast Asia Situation and Japan-ROK relationship.
