The Research On The Sino-ROK Relations In The Post-Cold War Era

Rapid progress has been made in various fields on friendly relations and cooperation between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Korea since the two countries established diplomatic relations on 24 August 1992. In the political field, leaders of both sides have many exchanges of visits and meetings in multilateral activities on the international arena, which have promoted mutual understanding and trust and enhanced the development of bilateral relations. On the economic front, the mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries has been constantly deepened and the two sides have become important trading partners. Progress has also been made in exchanges and cooperation in the fields of culture, education, science and technology. The two countries' cooperation and coordination in regional and international affairs have also been strengthened.This thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter simply reviews the Sino-Korean relations during the Cold War, During this Period, China and Korea are mutual hostile in politics, made military confrontation, separated in economy, and didn't recognize each other in diplomacy. But after the Cold War, the international relations and Northeastern Asian region situation have changed much, which provided the chance for the reconciliation of China and ROK. In this chapter, the author analysis the historical background of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Korea from both country sides; introduces the process of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries and summarizes the significance of that. In the second chapter, the author introduces the development of politics, economy and culture after the Sino-ROK reconciliation, and analysis the rapid development of Sino-ROK relations, especially the economy and trade relations. In the third part, author analysis the factors which restrict the Sino-ROK relations. In the last part, the author analysis the Sino-ROK relations from three aspects including the Korean Peninsula, Northeastern Asian region and global international relations.In fact, the China policy concerning the Korean peninsula has become a system,which in form appears two connected and interacting layers: one is to keep peace and stability in Korean peninsula; the second is for the surrounding big countries and the purpose is to "regulate" the relevant countries.Facing the American attempt to dominate the peninsula and the Northeastern Asian region, China must continue to consolidate and improve Sino-ROK friendship, to actively push the North and the South to solve the peninsula issue independently, and in this way to ensure its floor and influence on the peninsula issue. Meanwhile counteracting that the US tries to realize "regional regulation" by integrating the two tactics of "use" and "restriction", China should adopt a pertinent double maneuver of "anti-use" and "anti-restrict" to frustrate the US hegemonic attempt in Northeastern Asia and to ensure that the Korean peninsula situation will not develop towards an unfavorable direction. Only in this way, we could really maintain peace and stability in the Korean peninsula and truly promote the prosperity and development of the Northeastern Asian region.
