Founded from1950s, the US-ROK alliance has already celebrated its60thbirthday, which is seen as the cornerstone for South Korea’s safety and the stabilizerof Korean Penisula.Successive administrationsof S.Korea all put ROK-US relations as priority ofKorea’s foreign affairs. Its specific policies differ from current domestic andtiooverseas background. In the period of Rhee Syng-man Adiministration andpost-Korean War period, the alliance was founded by Mutual Defence Treaty betweenthe United States of America and the Republic of Korea and other mutual agreements. In the1960s and1970s, following the Nixon Doctrine, the US government reducedmilitary deployment influenced by the US-Soviet Cold-War conditions.Under ParkChung-hee administration, Korean government did some adjustments on the Alliance,at the same time to coordinate America’s Asia Policy, Korea dispatched troops toVietnam, which did not weaken the whole US-ROK alliance. After the cold war, influenced by situations of Northeast Asia and Anti-Americanism in Korea, thealliance has been challenged much. Especially in the entrance of21stcentury, thealliance has entered a time of redefinition.Having taken office since Feb.2013, facing threat from North Korea’s nucleartest, Park Geun-hye inherited her predecessor Lee Myung-Bak’s practice, madehigh-profile memorial for the60thanniversary of US-ROK alliance. At the same timeshe support America’s Asia-Pacific rebalancing strategy. The US-ROK alliance policy presents following features: redefining the alliance;the police serving for the domestic political situation; maintaining independenceinside the alliance; attaching importance to Korea-China relations at the same time.Park Geun-hye’s US-ROK alliance policy has received few effects such ashaving stabilized domestic situation; Korea economy has gained certain development;Korea’s international status has been improved; the relation between North and SouthKorea has been warmer at a time. However, the policy could not solve the NorthKorea’s nuclear issue effectively; the US-ROK alliance could not get the equal position as US-Japan alliance; the policy to balancing diplomacy between China andUS is under great challenge.
