National Prestige And China 's Strategic Choice

Prestige is a kind of influence and attraction, which prompt other internationalactors emit positive response and positive evaluation. This kind of influence andattraction can help state to carry out its foreign policy effectively and gain moreinternational interests. It is important part of the state’s grand strategy, especially inthe era of globalization. Positive prestige is the ideal form of state’s prestige. Since theobjective existence of different strength and interests between states, one state canconstruct its prestige, and prestige construction is a necessary approach to gain andmaintain the state’s interests. Institutional power and effective international interactionare two basic ways of prestige construction.Maintaining international rights and interests, then to gain more internationalinterests is the fundamental task of China’s diplomacy. To construct state’s prestige, isan important choice of answering the strategic question that how to improve China’sworld influence and international status effectively by peaceful way.The front part of the article puts forward the basic analytical framework aboutprestige, then, in the latter part, according to this framework to discuss China’sdiplomatic activities, and argues that China should pay more attention to theconstruction of prestige.
