The national interest is the core proposition of the study of international relations, and the sole basis for a country to make external strategies. China will inevitably start from the comprehensive analysis of its own realistic national interests, combine with the international political circumstances and surrounding geographical environment and make the diplomatic strategic choices to maximize the maintenance and expansion the national interests. This paper has comprehensively summarized the concept, essence, and characteristics of national interests, the three major schools of the international politics, and the Marxism’s view on national interests; generalized the classification of national interests; made a conclusion about national interests’characteristics from four aspects. After the theoretical preparation, this paper has comprehensively analyzed China’s view of national interests in different periods in detail, and illustrated the connotation of the China’s national interests and its changes and expansion in the rising China. This paper has sorted national interests into different to groups according to different standards so that it would be easier to study. Moreover, this paper has divided countries into four levels on the basis of countries’different demands of national interests, which served as a research tool. Countries from different levels have different pursuits of national interests, which finally decide the diplomatic strategies of one country. By discussing China’s aspiration of national interests, we positions china as a large, regional power which undertakes limited international responsibilities. Thus, China’s national interest demands mainly lies around China and the Asia-Pacific regions, the focus of China’s foreign strategies is big power diplomacy,(such as Sino-U.S., Sino-Russia, Sino-Japan), and the diplomacy with neighboring countries which is closely related to its national interests, and will directly affect the political and economical affairs in the peripheral of China and Asia-Pacific regions. This paper emphasizes on identifying China as a large regional country which is pursuing a higher level of national interests after the comprehensive analysis of China’s national interests, and concludes China’s diplomatic strategies are limited aggressive. China’s pursuit of national interests is to safeguard and develop the national interests commensurate with the national strength around China and the Asia-Pacific regions which has a limit both in scope and in the peaceful cooperation ways.
