Modernization is a historical process of the world. It shows that national modernization cannot leave the mutual influence and interaction with the outside world. Marked by the Third Plenary Session of the 11 th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, China put forward the reform and opening up.This is not only a response to the historical trend of the world modernization but alsomeans deepening understanding of the modernization. It also means that China’s socialist modernization has entered a new historical period. The paper is based on this knowledge background, aimed to explore Japan’s influence on China’s modernization since the reform and opening up, especially from the 70 s to 90 s. The external factors contributes a lot to the achievements of reform and opening up, but the significance of the external factorsis often tend to be neglected by people.This paper is tended to reveal the significance of external factors. And it will make sense to deepen reform and opening up and promote China’s socialist modernization.This article consists of four parts.The first partmainly describes that Japan as China’s neighbors and has highest level of modernization in East Asia, its advanced science and technology, modern management experience and modernizationconstruction opened its doors to Chinese people to see the gap between the modernization of China and Japan. Especially Deng Xiaoping visiting Japan in1978 has resulted a upsurge of exchanges and visits between Japan and China, which plays a very positive role in confirming reform and opening up.The second part describe that Japan is a capitalist market economy based with countries lead type modernized development model, which has impact on China’s modernization in the two points. First, the mode of nation leading modernization is easy to be comprehended; Second, the success of the Japanese market economy prompted China to recognize the market economy and to break through the traditional concept of socialist planned economy system.The third part analyze that the Japan’s capital, assistance, technology, advanced experience in management and other things promote China’s modernization at the early period of reform and opening.The fourth part describes thatthrough analyzing Japan’s influences on China’s modernization since the reform and opening up, it can concludeenlightenment to China’s modernization. China’s modernization requires good relations between China and Japan, pay attention to and seek good external environment, combine internal and external factors in modernization construction.
