The era of Asad is an important period in the history of the modern Syria. The authoritarian-presidential system of one-party set up by Hafiz al-Assad made Syria get rid of the turbulent "Praetorian Society", and maintained a long term of the basic political stability. However, this entirely depending on the personal authoritarian political order has obvious limitations and transitional. There were many deep economic, social, and religious contradictions lurking under the governance of strong suppression, and these problems become the root cause of the unrest in Syria today. This paper contains three major components. The first part based on the theory of political stability analyzes the background, structure and characteristics of Asad system; The second part divides the era of Asad into three stages for dynamic analysis according to the time dimension with political stability, and discusses the relationship between Asad system and political stability from several aspects of political, economic, social, religious and so; The last part studies factors of the pros and cons influencing the Syrian political stability from the perspective of both inside and outside. Asad system is the special product of Syrian historical development. The pyramidal structure and new authoritarianism characteristic of this system basically meets the objective needs of the Syrian social development. During 30 years of Assad’s reign, the political stability of Syria presented the obvious characteristic of the stage, the mutual restriction relationship between Asad system and political stability was very obvious. With modernization and globalization evolving, the negative influence of Asad system on political stability had become increasingly prominent.Generally speaking, Asad’s Syria is a "steady and turbulent" state. The contradiction between the relative lag of political development and the drastic change of economic order forms the root cause of political unrest in the process of modernization of the developing countries. In addition, Syria is affected by multiple influences of family fights, sectarian conflict and geopolitics.
