After the "corrective movement" in November 1970, al-Assad gradually established a strong authoritarian political system characterized by a "dual power" structure in Syria via reconstructing the political system, which not only ended a long political turmoil in Syria after its independence and safeguarded its national stability, but also explored gradually the road of modernization with strong Syrian color. After Bashar reigned in June 2000, Syria gradually opened up its transformation of authoritarian Political and economic development model, thus, the authoritarian politics presented the characteristics of a gradual weakening. So in order to make distinction of Assad's political system with a highly authoritarian features, we call Syria's authoritarian politics as "weak authoritarian" at that time.Although the Syrian authoritarian politics played a positive role at nation stability and economic development, it led to political corruption, high unemployment ratio and a series of social problems. Despite the Syrian's strong authoritarian was weakened to some extent after Bashar reigned, but this weakening was carried out within certain limits. What's more, the economic liberalization disengaged itself from the political democratization process after Bashar reigned, resulting in prominent political corruption and other social problems in Syria, which became a huge threat to the Assad family's continuity reign.Taking civilization intercourse as its research angle and authoritarian politics in Syria as its theme, this thesis attempts to analyze the factors that affect the political development process of Syria, such as the Assad family, the Alawi minority, the Syrian Baath Party and the country. It compares in depth the characteristics and differences of two prominent leaders in authoritarian politics, revealing the problems and challenges of political modernization in Syrian regime during the East-West system civilization intercourse, which provides a necessary reference to understand correctly the political modernization of developing countries for us.
