Qian Dangsheng 's Political Thought (1924-1949)

Since the First Opium War, with the invasion of western powers, Chinese society came into the transition period, and the transition of traditional system and knowledge hierarchy in China admitted of no delay. In the1920s, having studied abroad and achieved a lot in the Europe and the United States, a flood of liberal intellectuals went home, introducing the western advanced political institution and modern science and culture into China, pulling open the modernization curtain of Chinese discipline hierarchy. Western political science was introduced into China since late Qing Dynasty and transformed by native politicians, so the level of localization and modernization was improved a lot. As a result, Chinese political science came into being,and hit the development peak during the1930s to1940s. As an outstanding one of Chinese native politicians, Qian Duansheng is the founder of Chinese modern political science. On the basis of research of one case, this thesis clarifies the sequence of political thoughts of Qian Duansheng, involving his political activities, by classifying and sorting his articles published by the newspapers and magazines in the Republic of China. The attempt of this effort is to restore the historical face of a public intellectual to the best of my ability, peering into the political choice, ambivalence and psychological process of Qian Duansheng in the specific political background of the Republic of China, revealing the final end-result of liberal intellectuals represented by Qian Duansheng, and providing a historical reference for success or failure between the Nationalist Party and the Communist Party.The thesis will mainly launch the research about the political thoughts of Qian Duansheng from following4parts. The first part presents the development process about Chinese political science on detail from late Qing Dynasty to the1930s, giving consideration to several formation phases about the political thoughts of Qian Duansheng, to highlight his academic status in the circle of political science during the Republic of China, and pioneering contribution in founding Chinese modern political science. The second part analyses the formation basis about the political thoughts of Qian Duansheng from political background that times and theoretical origin. The third part is the main body and core part of this thesis. His political thoughts realizes mature around the Anti-Japanese War. The last part is peroration. It integrates evaluation infiltrating into the political thoughts, realizing that limitations about Qian Duansheng are also common failing of liberal intellectuals that times, raising the themes to a high level.
