Traditional remote monitoring system has many limitations because its communications and control were implemented by wiring, generally. Wireless network technology has become a new trend because of its simple and easy operation. As a"central controller", the gateway is indispensable, which can monitor and manage the work-site devices, and warn by SMS or phone, if there is some emergency situation happened. As the core of monitoring system, gateway connects the different communication networks to achieve the data transmission. The traditional gateway could not meet the requirements for monitoring a large number of data transmissions autonomously, since it is made by 8-bit or 16-bit SCM and harbors the limit computing capacity and storage that only could provide the access to Ethernet with low-speed and small amount of data, as well as it contains the poor real-time. What's more, the commonality of such gateway is poor because it only supports specific devices, which prevents its popular utilization. However, in recent years, some new intelligent gateways introduced using PC or quasi-PC as the hardware platform could not be widely accepted by the market because of its high price. In this research, a new remote monitoring gateway was designed by ARM (Advaneed RISC Machines) microprocessor S3C44B0X (SAMSUNG), which encompasses high performance together with low power consumption and system cost. Then, after analyzing theμCLinux operating system, we successfully transplanted it to the hardware platform, subsequently; the development of application programs of gateway was completed. The new gateway in this research has many advantages, such us the capacities of being cut and expansion on software and hardware. Users can directly view device status by the local LCD, and call the fixed phone number or SMS to monitor it by receiving the GSM module. The design achievement has been embedded into the secondary platform for the development of products and teaching.
