As the computer and communication technology developing, people pay more attention on the IM technology. In the area of the OA, E-government and personal communication, IM technology is widely used. Mean while, as the supervision and control system of the electric power system becoming more and more sophisticated and complex., to design and implement an IM system to meet the need which can release the system manager from the daily work and make the management of the electric supervision and control more convenience is a problem that worth to solve. This thesis discusses the model and the communication mechanism and the security of the IM system, designs and implements an IM system that fits for the electric supervision and control system.Firstly, analyzed and researched the model of the existing IM system--Client/ServerModel and P2P Model. More research is taken on the Client/Server Model. The comparison of advantages and disadvantages of the two models is made. The Client/Server model is discussed from the architecture, the function and the work-flow respectively; secondly, discussed some key problems of the IM system including the protocol, the address resolution and the security. The protocol is the core of the system.Only two systems with same protocol can communicate--the Client and Server cansend message to each other. The address resolution is the first problem to solve. Only the sender knows where to send the messages that can the message be delivered to the correct place. Thirdly, researches the security problem that commonly existing in the most IM systems and gives the resolution. Most IM use the authentication techniques to identify the entities which have sent and received message and use encryption techniques to encrypt the message to guarantee the security of the content of the message.Based on the analysis and research of the existing IM System, this thesis designs and implements an IM system that fits for the electric power supervision and control system. By using the mobile terminal, the system manager can login to the system, supervise and control the state of the system. In the same time the system can report the state and the message of the system to the system manager by SMS, or dial the telephone of the system manager and report the message by voice.
