The technology of virtual reality is recently one of the most cutting-edge advancedcomputer technologies. It synthesizes computer graphics, multimedia, sensing, network,human-computer interaction, simulation and other technologies. It also crosses manydisciplines such as mathematics, mechanics and optics. It has strong development potential, can be applied widely, and is considered as an important developing discipline in 21 st centuryand eventful technology which will influence human beings' life. The application of virtual reality to CAD/CAE system, can radically improve the virtualsimulation of engineering data in the system, help designers comprehend the data moreexactly and fred out the defects of the engineering design, thereby shorten the period ofproduct design and development. This paper applied virtual reality technology to the finiteelement prepossessing and post-possessing, namely, developed the "finite elementprepossessing and post-possessing system based on virtual reality environment (FEMVR)". Itseeks out an effective way to retrofit finite element prepossessing and post-possessing system. It is also a benefit attempt to apply virtual reality technology to CAD/CAE system. In the beginning, the paper recapitulative introduces virtual reality technology, expoundsits basic conception, features, development, application fields and current research situation athome and abroad. It afterwards presents used toolkit software and some key technologies tobuild a virtual reality environment. Following, it exhaustively describes the methods on theanalysis and design of the system, the functions of the modules of the final selected designscheme with relational codes, especially the explosion simulation module which relates tocollision detection. Then it uses C++ programming language, Qt and OpenGL Performertoolkit to implement corresponding procedures to test the design scheme. In the end, itsummarizes the finished work and looks ahead the design tasks in the future.
