CoolTek Technologies, Inc., is a handset chip solution provider specializing in SOC design of mobile communications and multimedia terminals. With kinds of portable video and camera equipments are accepted by people, video player is integrated by more and more handset products. To meet market demand and improve products' competition, CoolTek choose popular MPEG-4 as its vedio solution on high-end hanset, and integrate it into current mutimeida system framework on Lily chip.Lily is a 16/32 bits MIPS microchip developed by CoolTek, which have multi-core framework composed of RISC and DSP. Because MPEG-4 decoder needs mass of computation but Lily' s DSP only specializes in audio application, software decoding on RISC always can' t meet the requirement of real time play. The purpose of this paper is that, design a hardware accelerator-MMA cooperating with software decoding to achieve MPEG-4 real time playing.MPEG-4 video standard and simple profile tools is introduced first in this paper. In order to get the performance of MPEG-4 decoding precisely, we port XVID( Open source software complied to MPEG-4) to Lily multimedia software framework. By fast software simulation on RISC core, we get the profile of every operation of MPEG-4 decoding and make certain which module should be designed as MMA. During the MMA development, all algorithm is optimized and hardware design skills is introduced in detail. At last, the paper give the result of MMA synthesis and co-verification based on FPGA system, which shows that solution proposed by this paper successfully achieve the system goal.
