The numerical information age has brought "the information explosion" and made the data quantity increase quickly and the situation is the same with the image data. If the image data isn't compressed effectively, the storing and transforming of the image information will be unable to carry on. Obviously, it has great practical significance to search for a system with high speed and efficiency.A real-time image processing system has been designed based on large-scale field programmable logic arrays (FPGA) and high-speed digital signal processor (DSP). In order to design the high performance and low power image processing system, a FPGA(EP1C12Q240 C8) chosed from ALTERA's Cyclone series chip and DSP(TMS320VC5502) chosed from TI's 55x series chip are used. The system integrates image acquisition, compression, display and storage functions in one. In the system, DSP is host processor which is responsible for image processing; FPGA is co-processor which is responsible for all digital logic work.All work in the system is divided between the FPGA and DSP in the form of the pipelined, and a single-chip dual-port RAM(CY7C025AV-15AI) is used for data communication between the two main chips. Considering FPGA and DSP's own characteristics, a novel data transmission structure with a dual-port RAM which is divided into two halves, is applied to buff the high-speed real-time image data by Ping-pong technique.FPGA and DSP undertake the whole processing work, including video data capturing, transforming, compressing and storing. According to their respective advantages and disadvantages, on one hand, the system meets the real-time requirement, on the other hand, its flexible structure makes it convenient for later expansion and promotion. The result indicates that it has carried on the JPEG compression to the gathering image successfully on TMS320VC5502. The system has gained good effect and met the real-time demand, therefore the system's function obtained confirmation as a whole.
