Third-party technology source denotes the business companies or academic entities that accept contract work from clients for specific R&D tasks. Nowadays, the development of different external technology sources is making an increasingly negative effect on chief leader enterprises in manufacture industry which gradually collapse their predominance on monopolization of technology. Meantime, technology and information is spreading and transferring globally in an unpredictable velocity which imposes the enterprises converting from closed innovation mode to open innovation mode. On the one hand, the globalization technology research and transfer is a new trend, and enterprises using varieties of external technology sources in terms of products innovation and competition ability promotion is progressively common. On the other hand, open innovation mode supports a group of new-born enterprises in competition with chief leaders who used to monopolize the technology in their fields. So, third-party technology source provides Chinese enterprises a new approach in integrating innovation which will contribute to the development of their competition abilities.This article aims at studying third-party technology source based on magnitude of references and case study. At first, the rationale of the formation of third-party technology source is studied. Moreover, with the case analysis of Chery automobile company and Dalian shipbuilding industry CO., LTD in China, third-party technology source's positive effect on Chinese enterprises in terms of independent innovation is demonstrated. In addition, it is followed by the analysis of acquisition approach which can be divided into 1) analysis and identification process;2) technology search and acquisition;and 3) interiorization after acquired. Then, an enterprise technology identification model is built up to facilitate the estimation of necessity of third-party technology source acquisition. It is followed by summarizing third-party technology source search technique and acquisition path. Finally, a Chinese-enterprise third-party technology source acquisition process model is built up based on the promotion of competition ability that was interiorized by third-party technology source and its feedback evaluation.The independent innovation of enterprises in China was initiated under circumstances of low development investigation and deficient technology basis comparing to the developed countries, so it is inevitable to be constrained by the "bucket effect", which is the lack of some technologies obstructing the realization of the entire innovation. However, with anincreasing velocity in shortening the technological capability distance of Chinese enterprises and foreign enterprises, foreign enterprises no longer transfer advanced technology with Chinese enterprises for keeping ahead the technology advantage, which is called the "ceiling effect".So it is important to emphasize the illuminative function of independent innovation. Based on the practical situation of China's market to optimize research and development investigation, to focus development on the specialty of enterprises themselves and to concentrate the limited innovation resources in particular area in terms of technology breaching is an important period for Chinese enterprises' independent innovation.
