Research of urban spatial expansion has been an important content to urban and regional science. This thesis, with regional visual angle and with the theories of urban and regional science, building up the research logicol model from space-time reviewing to mechanism researching to measures optimized, researched thoroughly on the mechanism of city evolution of ChongQing.Based on the landuse maps of ChongQing 1998, 2001 and 2004, its spatial and temporal process of urban landuse expansion was analyzed through spatial-clustering and historical- morphological approaches. The growth index (GI), was employed instead of growth speed to describe the spatial differentiation of urban landuse expansion. Assisted by spatial analysis techniques of GIS, the average GIs per year (AGIPY) of 40 communes or towns during 1998~2001 and 2001~2004 were calculated and then classified through the Natural Breaks method, and the spatial differentiation maps of urban landuse expansion in ChongQing during 1998~2001 and 2001~2004 were made.In the paper, the author whole looked back the preceding of the study on urban region spatial structure, and with the data base of the issue of this field, to dope out the emphasis of the field in later period.lt can be concluded that the inherence factors are the basic ones ofthe urban spatial expansion, and the outer factors are condition ofthese.Economic factors are the main factors, the policy and programming factors are the deciding factors in extemalism factors. The author tried to make it clear of the motivity of urban expansion, use linear recursive model, research and forecast ChongQing urban expansion, then construct the ideal regional spatial structure of ChongQing.
