The Geographic Information System has developed for almost half a century. During this period, because of the development of Geographic Information System, fields that use Information System have been greatly increased. Nowadays, as the rapid development of computer hardware and software, the Geographic Information System is experiencing a rapid development process. The Geographic Information System is not only being used in mapping, management of resources, map-making and management of environment, but also in many other fields. The Virtual Campus is one of the fields that based on Geographic Information System. Today as the rapid development of Geographic Information System, multimedia technology and computer network, Information-based Campus becomes a research focus. The Virtual Campus made it possible for people to have an intuitive and comprehensive understanding of the information of the university. It provides great convenience for the people who live and study in the campus. So many universities try hard to develop their own Virtual Campus System, but the functions of all these Virtual Campus Systems are just limited in showing to people the map of the campus and the basic information about the subject in the campus and360degree field of view at one point of campus. You can’t know the information about the infrastructure of the university, the students’information, the teachers’information, information about resource of the university and the institute of the university. It means that now the function of many universities’Virtual Campus Systems is just trying to show the campus to the users. People who work in the university can’t get the information from the system that is useful for managing the university. In this passage the writer tries to make some progress in these aspects. The Virtual Campus System described in the passage contains the function of showing to people the information about the infrastructure of the university, the students’information, the teachers’information, information about the resource of the university and the institute of the university. And all of these are connected to the concrete position in the campus. The Virtual Campus System described in the passage can not only show the scenery of campus to the people but also offer the valuable information to the people who work in the university. They can make the decision for management based on the information the system offered. In this passage, firstly, the writer introduces the Virtual Campus and Geographic Information System generally; then describes the development of the Virtual Campus, the development of Geographic Information System and the function and system structure of Geographic Information System. After this, the passage has a detailed description of the requirement of the system and does requirement analysis for the system. Then there will be a solution for the requirement mentioned in the passage. It shows the detailed design for the system. The main parts of the system are written as follows:(1)The user can read the3D map of every campus of the university.(2)The user can know the exact locations and relevant information of buildings, colleges and parking lots.(3)The user can also view the topology of the road web, pipeline webs and networks. In addition, the passage also give a detailed description about how to program some parts of the system such as zoom of map, how to grab and drag the map, the interaction between client and server and panoramic display.
