The sampling is an important way to take soil and rock from moon, Mars, and other planets. The ultrasonic/sonic driller/corer(USDC) which is driven by piezoelectric system has some characteristics, such as the light weight, the small size, the low power, no rotating parts and no lubrication, so it can break the traditional drillers’ limits, as heavy weight, high power, and rotating torque. Therefore, USDC can drill in other planets. In order to compare the different connection mode to the USDC’s performance and reveal the rock broken mechanism, USDC is studied in following aspects.The threaded USDC was designed. The ultrasonic actuator was designed by mechanical equivalent network, and the ultrasonic actuator was a half-wave vibrator, so USDC’s dimensions were calculated.The driller was ladder, and designed by the finite element.USDC was analyzed by ANSYS. Through the modal and harmonic analysis, USDC’s first order longitudinal resonance, response and displacement amplitudefrequency characteristic curve wereobtained.At the same time, the moderate effect of USDC in structure analysis was gotten.According to acoustic drilling which was studied by Sun Long, the rock broken mechanism was obtained. Ultrasonic vibration made its performance in the form of spring, and when the impact energywas greater than the energy required for rock fragmentation,the rocks werebroken. At the same time, it was obtained that the smaller the diameter of the drill was, the greater the impact force that drill to rock was.It was obvious to get that the free mass could enhance the effect of the USDC. Thus, the free mass was an important role in USDC, and can enhance the drill’s vibration.There were some problems in the design, analysis and test of USDC, including the piezoelectric ceramic’s heat, and the bench of USDC.The above research provides theoretical basis of the optimization of USDC’s design.The sampling process was simplified as a force on the response of successive columns to make the rock broken mechanism to quantify, and the USDC to use in engineering early.
